How Can You Help

The secret to the success of the Houston Nature Center is YOU!  The Center is owned and operated by the City of Houston (population 1,020), with no ongoing county, state, or federal funding.  Donations of time, talent and treasure account for about HALF of all Nature Center needs.  Here’s how you can help:

Join the Friends of the Houston Nature Center.  Your annual membership supports the nature center, plus you’ll get a newsletter & an “I Give a Hoot’ button.   Click to download a copy of the Giving Guide.

Make a tax-deductible donation.  You can choose to have your donation go toward trailhead amenities, the International Festival of Owls, educational displays and programs, or toward our future North American owl center.  Every donation of $100 or more is recognized on our donor board, and memorials are welcome. (See the Giving Guide as mentioned above for more information.)

Donate your time and talent as a volunteer.  People are needed to help with everything from staffing the nature center to display construction.  Over 100 volunteers are needed to help with all aspects of the International Festival of Owls in March with everything from baking to painting signs to kids activities.   E-mail nature@acegroup.cc if you’re interested in being added to the Center’s volunteer list.

Buy something from our gift shop.  You’ll find a wide variety of owl items as well as Minnesota field guides, hiking sticks, shirts, stickers and more.  Proceeds all help keep the Nature Center running.

Donate something from our wish list.  Our list changes from time to time, but we’re currently looking for:

  1. Digital video recorder (to update the At Home with Alice video)

  2. Black and color BCI-24 ink cartridges

  3. Postage stamps (any denomination)

  4. 10-12” wide barn boards (to build owl nest boxes)

Schedule an owl program for your school or organization.

Program fees help keep Alice the Owl employed and earning her keep!
